Healthcare and Drug Testing Issues for Employers

Due to current Congress laws and State Legislatures employers need to cover all their employees with a health care package. These health care coverage packages costs a lot and companies end up spending outrageously high sums of money. This is also why it gets tougher for an employee who has an existing health issue before being hired because they will not be taken on by any health provider, as it puts them at higher risks.

The problem gets even bigger with people who are regular drug users or those who use it for recreational purposes. Most drug users sooner rather than later are prone to health issues that results due to their drug abuse. This not only will cause problems at the work place for the employer and other employees but also raises the health care costs because unions don’t want random drug tests to take place. This affects the cost that each one pays; as the more frequently drug users fall ill due to their drug use, the higher the coverage goes. Most people might say they do drugs for recreational reasons, but who draws the line, who says one line of cocaine is ok and two lines are not. The government also plans to make certain drugs legal and on the other side provide a ‘universal health care program.’ Well have you ever wondered who pays for this universal health program, it’s you.

Drug users do drugs to escape the real world and sometimes make choices and decisions that may not be the most practical answer to their problems. Regular users may feel the urge for the drug when at work and forget all about their work or about helping a customer in their need for the drug. Athletes too suffer from such problems when they get dependent on performance enhancing drugs.

So, it not only boils down to whether it is right or wrong for employers to invade an employee’s private life by doing these drug tests, but also a question of do we want to pay the price for someone else’s drug desires by paying more for health care insurance coverage.
